  • Demonstrators gather during a climate protest in London's Parliament Square on Monday

Environmental protesters have threatened to bring London to a standstill as they attempt to disrupt some of the capital's busiest areas and force the Government to declare a climate emergency.

Climate change activists are causing gridlock in London by blocking major roads and junctions, including Waterloo Bridge over the Thames.

Extinction Rebellion has said that it will continue the protests in London all week, escalating the disruption day by day.

"You're turning Waterloo bridge into a garden?.But people have got to get to work".

Activists said they hope to create a "festival" of action, including people's assemblies, performances, talks, workshops and food. Campaign group Extinction Rebellion is expecting thousands to join the peaceful protests, which could last for weeks, as they demand the Government takes urgent action on climate change and wildlife declines.

"We are still in this position, and still facing this crisis", she said.

Yen Chit Chong, from Extinction Rebellion in London, said: "This is our last best shot at survival".

Il a par ailleurs assuré que le situation pouvait " être résolue rapidement " et qu'il était possible de " mettre un terme " à l'épidémie.

Demonstrators arrived at London's Hyde Park yesterday, some having journeyed to the city on foot in recent weeks from various parts of the UK.

The London protest is just one of 80 across the world in 33 different countries, according to organisers.

Hundreds of protesters slept in tents in Hyde Park overnight and many more from around the United Kingdom are expected to join them at five makeshift camps across London for the protest, expected to last at least a week.

Savannah, a protester for Extinction Rebellion, defended the protests and said the group want to start important conversations.

But police said no arrests were made overnight after earlier explaining their operational response to camping "would be dependent on what if any other issues might be ongoing at the time".

The Met said it had "appropriate policing plans" in place for the demonstrations and officers from across the force would be used "to support the public order operation".
