Alachua County sheriff's deputies said the bird's owner, Marvin Hajos, 75, was breeding the rare birds, which are native to New Guinea and Australia and considered the "world's most unsafe birds", WCJB reported.

Marvin Hajos, 75, died Friday after succumbing to injuries from the bird's attack, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

Reports suggest the man fell, possibly while feeding the animal, and the startled bird attacked as a result.

A cassowary bird, similar to the animal which killed man in Florida. Police have launched an investigation into the death, he said.

The Alachua County Fire Rescue Department told the Gainesville Sun that a cassowary mauled Hajos when he fell.

"EMS responded to an incident where the caller gave information that an exotic bird had attacked somebody on the property", Lieutenant Joshua Crews of the Alachua County Sherriff's office said.

A 2016 article from the Smithsonian described them as the "world's most unsafe bird".

Cassowaries are listed as a Class II species under the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's captive wildlife regulations and require a permit to own.

Class II is the same category as alligators, honey badgers and clouded leopards, while Class I includes more traditional predators such as a lions, tigers and bears. The zoo says it is second heaviest bird in the world, after its cousin the ostrich.

The creatures can jump nearly 7 feet into the air, "so the bird is quite good at fending off threats or escaping danger", the zoo states.
