World number one Novak Djokovic took out his frustration on the racket in a scrappy performance but did enough to overcome German Philipp Kohlschreiber in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday.

The world no. 1 could not control his temper during a freakish string of eight straight breaks of serve in the second set and was booed by the crowd when he took his anger out on his racquet at 2-4 down, repeatedly smashing it against the clay.

Djokovic double-faulted eight times and needed five match points to beat Kohlschreiber, who lost eight of their previous 10 matches but secured a rare win in the third round at Indian Wells last month. Midway through that, Djokovic needed treatment for a couple of minutes on his right thumb. He appeared to hurt it while sliding at the baseline during the fifth game.

Novak Djokovic celebrates his victory. "It was pretty rusty, but a win is a win".

On the third break point opportunity for Kohlschreiber, Djokovic inexplicably hit a backhand volley wide to put his opponent 4-2 ahead.

It has been a fascinating year for one of the greatest players of all-time, with Djokovic losing form after an huge performance to win the Australian Open invited predictions of a calendar year Grand Slam that would bring him within two of Roger Federer's record tally of 20 major championships. "Far from that", Djokovic said.

Serving for the match, Djokovic fluffed another three match points.

Later in the match he flung a racquet into the crowd when he was unable to reach a shot.

Later in the second, he lobbed his racquet at the ball when retrieving a shot at the baseline and inadvertently sent it into the crowd.

However he escaped a code violation altogether, which would have been his second - resulting in a point penalty - after he copped one for the racquet smash.

He next faces the victor of a second-round match between American Taylor Fritz and Argentina's Diego Schwartzman.

"Is this the best that I've played on clay? No".
