AU To Suspend Sudan Over Coup On Al Bashir

Sudan's ruling military transferred ousted President Omar al-Bashir to a prison in the country's capital, a military official and former minister said as hundreds of people marched Wednesday to a sit-in outside the army headquarters in Khartoum, calling for a quick handover of power to a civilian leadership.

A day later, he resigned and it was announced that Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, Inspector-General of the Armed Forces, would be the new interim President.

They say al-Bashir was moved from a "safe place" - the presidential residence inside the military headquarters - where he was held since his ouster, to Kopar Prison.

The embattled leader, BBC reported, was being held in solitary confinement under heavy security.

Sudan's military ousted Bashir after weeks of mass protests that climaxed in a sit-in outside the Defense Ministry compound.

Uganda will consider offering asylum to Bashir despite his decade-old indictment by the International Criminal Court, Uganda's state minister for foreign affairs, Okello Oryem, told Reuters. For years, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, had a hard relationship with Bashir, who was accused of supporting rebels opposed to Uganda's government. ICC member states, which include Uganda, are obligated to hand over indictees who enter their territory. The transitional military council has ruled out extraditing the country's former leader but have said he could be tried within Sudan itself.

TMC has declared all state entities should disclose financial holdings or face penalties.

The council also ordered the "suspension of the transfer of ownership of any shares until further notice and for any large or suspect transfers of shares or companies to be reported" to authorities.

Chief prosecutor Omar Ahmed Mohamed Abdelsalam, deputy public prosecutor Hesham Othman Ibrahim Saleh and head of public prosecutions Amer Ibrahim Majid have been sacked, a statement said.

Protesters, who are in talks with the military council, fear that the army, dominated by al-Bashir appointees, will cling to power or select one of its own to succeed him. Their removal was one of the demands of the SPA.

Details of Mahmoud's background was not immediately known. The European Union echoed that sentiment on Tuesday, refusing to recognize Sudan's military council and urging a civilian transitional government.

But in separate statements, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates expressed support for the military council. "We know what happened in Egypt and we don't want that to happen to us".

Mr Oryem also said that the government of Uganda is "closely watching" developments in Khartoum, and that Uganda prays, the players in the transition respect the will of the people.

The African Union Peace and Security Council on Monday gave the Sudanese military 15 days to hand over the country to civilian rule or it will suspend "the participation of Sudan in all AU's activities until the restoration of constitutional order".
