Two gorillas apparently posing for a selfie with a park worker have gone viral.

A photo of gorillas posing with park rangers in DR Congo has spread around the world.

Though it's common for primates to walk upright for "short bursts of time" as these two gorillas did, it's important to remember that it is "never permitted to approach a gorilla in the wild" for safety purposes, the post warns.

The park's deputy director, Innocent Mburanumwe, told BBC News that the gorillas had learned to imitate their caretakers.

Last year was a good year for gorilla population in the area, Virunga chief warden Emmanuel de Merode said on their website, stating there had been a "steady growth".

The work of Africa's oldest National Park continues today and the heritage site hopes that the photo showing another side of these cheeky primates might help encourage more interest and donations for their work in the country.

The rangers have been armed and trained to kill poachers in the park but critics say that this militarisation of the conservation units only serves to escalate conflict in an already volatile situation.

Because they've grown up with the rangers who rescued them, Mr Mburanumwe added, "they are imitating the humans" - and standing on two legs is their way of "learning to be human beings".

In 2013, the park authorities estimated that six mountain gorilla families - 100 individuals - were contained in Virunga and available to track.
