Microsoft quarterly revenue beats estimates on cloud growth

Net income rose 19 percent, while revenues were up 14 percent year over year (YOY).

Microsoft Corp beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit and revenue on Wednesday, powered by a surprise boost in Windows revenue and as growth in its cloud business stayed on track.
Another closely-watched cloud metric, commercial cloud revenue, increased 41 percent compared to the previous year to $9.6 billion. For the full year, ending June, earnings are projected to rise 14.4% year over year to $4.44 per share, while full-year revenue of $124.07 billion would mark a year-over-year increase of 12.3%.
For its third fiscal quarter, which ended on March 31st, Microsoft's Intelligent Cloud division revenue was $9.7 billion, a 22 percent improvement compared to the same quarter past year. The "productivity and business process" unit that includes both Office as well as social network LinkedIn had $10.2 billion revenue versus expectations of $10.05 billion. Lowe anticipated Commercial Cloud revenue growth of 39% on the back of 66% growth in Azure and 26% revenue growth in Office 365 Commercial.
Azure, Microsoft's flagship cloud product, competes with market leader Amazon.com's Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide computing power to businesses. Microsoft now has 180 million active monthly users on Office 365 Commercial, up 8 percent, and 34.2 million Office 365 Consumer subscribers, up from 30.6 million a year ago. Server products and cloud services grew 27 percent.
Overall, another solid quarter for the software giant.
