  • Anna Sorokin 28 was convicted Thursday of several grand larceny and theft of services charges

A woman was found guilty of stealing more than $200,000 from banks and friends while posing as a German heiress and scamming her way into NY society, the Manhattan District Attorney said.

The Manhattan jury found Anna Sorokin guilty of four counts of theft of services, three counts of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny following a monthlong trial that attracted global attention.

"I thank the jury for its service in this complex trial, as well as my office's prosecutors and investigators for their meticulous investigation and resolve to ensure that Sorokin faces real justice for her many thefts and lies".

"As proven at trial, Anna Sorokin committed real white-collar felonies over the course of her lengthy masquerade", Mr Vance said in a statement.

Sorokin is set to be sentenced on May 9.

She claimed her father was a diplomat or an oil baron and went to extraordinary lengths to have others pay her way. Sorokin allegedly duped Williams into paying a $62,000 bill for what was advertised as an all-expenses-paid trip to Morocco - a charge of which Sorokin was acquitted.

Anna Sorokin leaves the courtroom during jury deliberations in her trial at the New York State Supreme Court.

She also was accused of forging financial records in an application for a $22 million loan to fund a private arts club she wanted to build, complete with exhibitions, installations and pop-up shops, prosecutors said. She was denied the loan but persuaded one bank to lend her $100,000 she failed to repay.

Sorokin's attorney Todd Spodek likened her to Frank Sinatra, saying: "In a city that favors money and the appearance of money. they both created their own opportunities". He portrayed her as an ambitious entrepreneur who had merely gotten in over her head but had no criminal intent.

"There's a little bit of Anna in all of us", Mr Spodek said. She was acquitted of one count of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny. But he said he was pleased Sorokin had been acquitted of one of the most serious charges in the indictment: attempting to steal more than $1 million from City National Bank.
