  • French police clash with yellow vests protesters in Strasbourg

The "gilets jaunes" ("yellow vest") movement, which began as dissent against fuel tax hikes but has since snowballed into a more general backlash against Macron and his government, has been demonstrating consecutive weekends since early November.

France's finance minister promised that some 15 million households would benefit from tax cuts announced by President Emmanuel Macron, but the move did little to calm tempers among protesters.

With the announcements, Macron is seeking to take back control of the agenda after the political crisis generated by the yellow vest protests.

Around 2,000 protesters gathered near the seat of European Union institutions in Strasbourg, where organisers had planned make to the protest worldwide by symbolically marching to the parliament building, a month ahead of EU-wide parliamentary elections. But concerned about the violence and destruction of public buildings that have marked some yellow vest demonstrations in other parts of the country, authorities had banned protests and barricaded the neighborhood where the parliament and other European Union institutions are located.

They relaxed for a minute". "They're in a race, they blow it down for icing because Karlsson had the inside path". To me, it's similar plays: The guy on the inside got the call.

Previous yellow vest protests in the eastern city have mostly been peaceful.

In Aubagne near Marseille, a dozen or so protesters angrily rejected his speech, denouncing the reforms as "stupid trivial measures" which they said showed he had "not listened to the people's demands".

Priscillia Ludosky, a key figure in the movement, simply tweeted the dates of the next seven Saturdays, each marked with the word: "demo".

Similarly, Macron held a fresh press conference on Thursday, wherein he pledged a "significant" cut in income tax, especially for the middle-class. That was the second lowest turnout since the protests started in November. Protests continued despite Macron's efforts.
