  • Raylene Castle and Andrew Hoare arrive ahead of Rugby Australia's code of conduct hearing into social media posts by Israel Folau

The Israel Folau conduct hearing before Rugby Australia is likely to drag on into next week, however, there are reports today in the Sunday Telegraph that the disgraced player knocked back a $1 million offer to walk away before the matter commenced.

Folau is fighting to save his career after Castle issued the dual global with a "high-level" breach notice last month and threatened to tear up his four-year, $4 million contract following his latest round of inflammatory social media posts.

This was the second time he had made such comments on social media, and he had promised coach Michael Cheika and Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle that he would not post such material in future, thereby bringing his employer into disrepute.

Folau's defence counsel of solicitor Ramy Quatami and barrister Adam Casselden spent the opening day of the hearing arguing that Folau's latest round of inflammatory Instagram posts were merely passages from the Bible and not his direct words.

Folau was issued a formal warning after a similar post previous year but attempts by Rugby Australia to include specific clauses about social media posts in the contract the player signed in February were rejected, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Folau's landmark code of conduct hearing resumedBy Lena Reece Sunday 05/05/2019Israel Folau departs after Rugby Australia's code of conduct hearing at Rugby Australia HQ in Moore Park today. "There can't be any tolerance of bigotry", Roberts told Channel Nine's Sports Sunday program.

While Cheika last month said he would find it "difficult" to pick Folau for Australia again and senior teammates including Test captain Michael Hooper condemned him for his provocative stance, Folau has not been without support.

If he does have his contract terminated, Folau would be the first professional athlete in Australian sport wiped out for expressing their extreme religious beliefs.
