  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition leader Bill Shorten shake hands before the leaders debate. But are debates still relevant

The would-be egger approached Morrison as he left a Country Women's Association event this morning, coming up behind him and throwing an egg at the back of his head.

Scott Morrison: "She brought a six-pack of eggs, I reckon the ladies from the CWA could've taught her how to put them to better use".

An older woman at the function was knocked to the ground as the alleged attacker was quickly ushered away by security.

Following the incident the prime minister dubbed the activist as "cowardly".

"My main concern was I recently had surgery on my stomach so my main concern was holding my stomach to make sure it didn't get hit or somebody land on it", she said. "I helped her up and gave her a hug", he tweeted. She was charged with drug possession and common assault, after police said they found cannabis on her during a search.

Mr Morrison came to the aid of the woman who had been knocked over.

When reporters questioned her further, she said she had to go to work and she had no comment.

Update: NSW Police say that a 25-year-old woman is in custody, and that no injuries have been reported in relation to the great would-be egging of 2019.

Morrison called for more civility in the election campaign.

"Pardon the pun, but I don't want to over-egg this thing".

In the scuffle that followed, it wasn't the egger who was knocked down but a 70-year-old woman nearby. "At the same time, what my concern was, for Margaret and the disregard the individual seemed to have for those others who were in the room", Morrison told reporters.

Australia's opposition party officially launched its election campaign putting health care and climate change at the forefront of its bid for election on May 18.

The incident occurred during a visit by the prime minister to Albury, a New South Wales constituency where an independent candidate is the bookmakers' favorite as rural voters desert the government.
