Boeing's 737 order book shrank in April on Jet Airways woes

In audio obtained by CBS News, members of AA's pilots' union quizzed Boeing officials about the system - knowns as MCAS - in a tense meeting in November a year ago, weeks after a Lion Air Max crashed in Indonesia and four months before the loss of an Ethiopian Airlines Max.

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday he believes documentation on Boeing's 737 MAX should have told pilots more about the safety system that's suspect in two crashes that killed 346 people.

According to the reports, the pilots were particularly concerned about the MCAS anti-stall system that investigators in both Indonesia and Ethiopia have blamed for the crashes. The carrier hadn't taken delivery of any of the planes before the grounding began, and Boeing executives indicated last month that they would strike the orders from the backlog.

Boeing has been criticized for not disclosing how the MCAS anti-stall system worked - a move that allowed the company to avoid costly retraining.

The official, Boeing vice-president Mike Sinnett, claimed the Lion Air disaster was a once-in-a-lifetime accident.

"Boeing did not treat the 737 MAX situation like an emergency at the time of the November meeting with the Allied Pilots", the organization said.

But in a letter obtained by AFP, Michaelis said the instructions weren't sufficient for pilots to know how to handle malfunctions with the anti-stall system.

After its release, series creator Charlie Brooker hinted that another interactive installment might happen down the road - but not anytime soon.

Rep. Peter DeFazio, a Democrat from OR, the chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, said Boeing "has yet to provide a single document" in response to the committee's records requests.

On the audio, a Boeing official is heard telling pilots that software changes were coming, perhaps in as little as six weeks, but that the company didn't want to hurry the process. "That's the important thing". To make sure we're fixing the right things.

Airlines and governments worldwide ordered the 737 MAX 8 to stop flying in the days after the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

The release of the recording came as the House transportation committee opened a hearing into the role of Boeing's regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in certifying the Max.

The head of the US Federal Aviation Administration has faced another grilling in Congress following revelations that pilots complained to Boeing about the 737 MAX aircraft in the aftermath of a deadly crash a year ago.

Acting FAA administrator Daniel Elwell said he was "not aware of an internal assessment that reaches that conclusion". Southwest will cooperate with the request, Bloomberg reports.
