  • New Zealand PM Open internet doesn't mean accepting hate

It was organized by Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron, and will see world leaders and tech executives sign a pledge called the "Christchurch Call".

They're working all day on the "Christchurch Appeal", named after the New Zealand city where 51 people were killed in a March attack on mosques.

Facebook is introducing new restrictions on the use of its livestreaming technology in hopes of curbing violence and hate speech in response to a deadly terrorist attack in New Zealand that was broadcast live on the social media giant's platform.

Ardern has been the driving force behind the Paris summit following the tragedy.

The New Zealand leader earned huge global prominence and respect after the attacks by reaching out to Muslim communities at home and vowing a widescale crackdown on extremist content.

Other key leaders attending include Jordan's King Abdullah II, Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Theresa May and EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker.

The company pointed to current community standards that prohibit spreading terrorist propaganda on the social network.

The Christchurch call meeting is to get underway around 1400 GMT and finish with a press conference by Ardern and Macron at 1600 GMT.

Rory McIlroy announces he will represent Ireland at Tokyo Olympics
McIlroy had been scheduled to play for Ireland in 2016 until announcing that June he would not be going. He said that his past experiences representing Ireland sealed the decision.

While not having Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the meeting is regrettable, "what's fundamental is for Facebook to agree to this plan", Ardern told Le Monde in an interview published Wednesday.

Facebook did not specify which offences were eligible for the one-strike policy or how long suspensions would last, but a spokeswoman said it would not have been possible for the shooter to use Live on his account under the new rules.

Ardern said the new rules are a step in the right direction. "To be honest, I do not understand the United States", she said. "The entire event was livestreamed. the scale of this horrific video's reach was staggering", she wrote.

Ardern has not made specific demands of social media companies in connection with the pledge, but has called for them "to prevent the use of livestreaming as a tool for broadcasting terrorist attacks".

Also, there's no clarity on what happens after the 'set period, ' when the user regains the ability to post live videos.

To prevent that from happening in future, the social network's investing $7.5 million for a research partnership with the University of Maryland, Cornell University, and the University of California, Berkeley.

Ahern was responding to a question from CNN's Christiane Amanpour who was asking whether countries can learn from New Zealand.

Mr Breslin said it was a token measure and lacking in detail.
