Every year, the Sunday Times calculates who are the richest people in Britain and release dozens of lists, according to identifiable wealth including land, property, other assets such as art, and shares in companies. The number donating more than 1 per cent has sunk by a quarter in just two years.

The rich list reveals that despite a turbulent year, the 1,000 richest individuals and families in Britain are sitting on a record wealth of 1,002 billion dollars, an increase of 62.12 billion dollars compared with a year earlier.

The combined wealth of Britain's billionaires has reached £524.84bn, up from £480.45bn a year ago, a 9.2 per cent rise.

The list, which estimates the 1,000 richest people in the United Kingdom, is based on identifiable wealth including land, property, other assets such as art, and shares in companies, according to the Sunday Times. The calculations do not include the amount contained in people's bank accounts.

Meanwhile, chemicals firm founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who topped last year's list, has slipped to third place, with 18.15 billion pounds.

The Hindujas have stakes in oil and gas, IT, energy, media, banking, property and healthcare.

This year, another pair of siblings, David and Simon Reuben, came in second. The Rajasthan-born steel magnate logged an estimated fortune worth 10.66 billion pounds past year as he gets set to take control of his first steel plant in India with a purchase from Essar Steel.

For the sixth year in a row, Scotland's richest person was named as Glenn Gordon and his family, the Jersey-based tycoon behind distillers William Grant & Sons.

Indian-born industrialist brother, Sri and Gopichand Hinduja, reclaimed the title of Britain's wealthiest by posting fortunes of 22 billion pounds to their name.

Industrialist Swraj Paul and family are placed 69th with a wealth of £ 2 billion.
