British Steel, deuxième aciériste du pays qui est aussi le repreneur déclaré d'Ascoval, aurait de gros soucis financiers. Dans le Nord, les syndicats d'Ascoval sont sous le choc après cette annonce inattendue. La presse britannique, elle, évoque le risque d'une possible faillite.

Dans un communiqué, le groupe "confirme que des négociations sont en cours avec le gouvernement britannique pour assurer la continuité de son activité et la poursuite de ses investissements en Grande-Bretagne, dans le contexte des incertitudes créées par le Brexit". Il rappelle avoir déjà dû faire appel à l'aide du gouvernement britannique le mois dernier pour payer auprès de Bruxelles une facture liée aux émissions de CO2.

La chaîne d'information, qui n'identifie pas ses sources, indique qu'un soutien financier avait été décidé par le gouvernement début mai mais que sa conclusion a pris du retard.

Interrogé par l'AFP, le ministère de l'Economie n'a pas souhaité faire de commentaire sur ce qu'il a qualifié de fuite.
