  • Leafs president Brendan Shanahan signs 6-year extension

"One of the things we are most proud of at MLSE is our team leaders' impact on each of our team's successes and our company's culture, and Brendan is a flawless example of that", MLSE president and CEO Michael Friisdahl said.

On Tuesday, Shanahan re-signed for six more years, which could keep him in the fold until the end of the 2024-25 season. "Brendan's positive impact on this team has not only been felt on the ice, where the team is on an impressive path, but throughout the league, with the Leafs' alumni, and in the community. We look forward to continued success for the Maple Leafs under Brendan's leadership over the next six years", said Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum in a statement.

Since the Toronto native took on the role with the team in April, 2014 - the beginning of what is sometimes referred to as the "Shana-Plan" - the Leafs bottomed out in the standings before a resurgence that has seen the franchise make the playoffs in each of the past three seasons.

China industrial production and retail sales are slated for Wednesday, same day as US retail sales and industrial production. Without treasuries to fall back on, the yuan could appreciate vis a vis the dollar, even with the fixed exchange rate.

"When MLSE approached me several months ago to discuss an extension, I told them this would be quite simple as I've had no desire to leave what we've started here with the Maple Leafs", Shanahan said, per the team's release. "I'm thankful to the Board of Directors, our coaches, trainers, management and office staff, and especially our players for the professionalism and dedication they display every day".

If Shanahan stays for the life of the deal, he will have spent 11 seasons with the Leafs, two more than he ever played for a single team during his Hall of Fame career.

Internationally, Shanahan won gold medals with Canada at the 1991 Canada Cup, 1994 IIHF World Championship and the 2002 Winter Olympics.
