The Italian Tennis Federation justified the decision to raise prices by saying that they wanted "to reward fans" who had bought tickets before they knew Federer would play. "Regardless of what happens here, I just think it's good for me to play matches at this stage", Federer added.

At 37 and with 20 Grand Slam titles, Roger Federer still gets excited about playing tennis. In some cases, like Naomi Osaka's, a third-round match will be contested between two players that have already played the same day. Federer is an elite tennis player and he should be too good for his opponent in this match.

"I was in the mood to play", Federer said Tuesday after a practice session on the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale. He said the cool weather at home also convinced him to make the trip to Rome. Federer, for example, will play Joao Sousa second on Centrale, with the victor facing Borna Coric fifth on Grandstand.

Federer is a four-time runner-up at the Italian Open, which he's never won, making it one of the few significant trophies he hasn't claimed.

They brought in a "no refund" policy after doubling ticket prices for Wednesday to reap the financial benefits of Federer's return to the venue - only confirmed after he lost in the quarter finals in Madrid last week - generating ill-will for the event among the local public.

"It gets me so vexed, I'm like angry now that I just hear that name". That's obviously disappointing to hear.

"They made it in a way like they rewarded the fans who bought tickets earlier, which is sort of unusual".

"I just really hope it doesn't take away the fact I'm really happy to be here. I mean, my excitement couldn't be bigger".

However, Federer found the explanation hard to swallow. It was a very close match for Sousa as the final 2 sets were both decided by tiebreakers.

Speaking in the wake of his excellent win on clay over Russia's Daniil Medvedev in Rome this week, Kyrgios also admitted that the week of the Mexican Open in Acapulco in March this year, where he won the title over Alexander Zverev, that he had gone out partying every night and was going to bed at 4:30am.

"Always enjoyed playing in Italy". Federer ended the hard court season very strongly as he won the Miami Masters but it seemed that the Swiss superstar was struggling on clay.
