Of course, being fired from Disney initially meant that he would no longer get to work on Guardians, a series into which he'd poured a ton of time and effort. "And, of course, Dave Bautista, who came out so strong", Gunn remembered. And then I had to go tell Kevin Feige I had just chose to do The Suicide Squad, so that made me very nervous.
Gunn adds, "I wanted to feel that way about Disney".
In particular Gunn attributed the importance of him returning to Guardians 3 to finishing the character arc for Rocket the racoon.
"I know that people have been hurt by things that I've said, and that's still my responsibility."
The events of last summer were hard for Gunn, who recalled the day of his firing as "the most intense of my entire life". But as of the end of Avengers: Endgame, Rocket seems like his arc from petty criminal to superhero is fairly complete - where could he go from here? Gunn explained that "the initial conversations with [Disney head Alan Horn] weren't, 'Let's figure out if I should come back.' It was, 'Let's talk about this.'" And though it "felt as if my career was over", there were still those willing to work with him.
"Chris Pratt calling me and freaking out; Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan, all calling and crying". That amount of love that I felt from my friends, my family, and the people in the community was absolutely overwhelming. When he was sacked, he was the saddest about not being able to bring Rocket's story to a close. "And then I had to go tell [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige I had just chose to do The Suicide Squad, so that made me very nervous".
In a new interview with Deadline, Gunn said the incident previous year made him realize what "real love" was after he was supported and embraced by those closest to him, including his Guardians actors such as Chris Pratt and Zoë Saldana. Groot is like my dog. I love Groot in a completely different way.
Gunn says not being able to complete the story of Rocket, played by Bradley Cooper, was one of the things he felt saddest about when he thought he wouldn't get to direct the third Guardians.
"He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3", continued Gunn.
"The Suicide Squad sequel, it just instantly started flowing", Gunn said. That was a big loss to me-not being able to finish that story-though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.
Speaking with Deadline, Gunn went over how his firing by Disney impacted his life and how he viewed himself.
