Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Wednesday signaled that his department is unlikely to comply with House Democrats' subpoena for President Donald Trump's tax returns, setting up a showdown that's expected to play out in court. "We're continuing discussions. There's still a lot of work to do".

But Trump softened his tone somewhat on Tuesday, praising his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, appealing to Beijing to purchase USA farm products and vowing to finalize a deal soon.

At a Wednesday hearing before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, Mnuchin was pressed by Sen.

During his line of questioning, Van Hollen asked Mnuchin if Congress has a "legitimate interest" in determining if the IRS is enforcing the tax laws when it comes to the president. "And this is why there are three branches of government so if there is a difference of opinion, this will go to the third branch of government to be resolved", he said.

"First of all, we haven't made a decision, but I think you can guess which way we are leaning on our subpoena", Mnuchin said. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) over questions concerning the release of President Donald Trump's tax returns, saying the administration is concerned about "weaponizing" the IRS. "To the extent that we don't and there is litigation, I take great comfort that there's a third branch of government to deal with this important issue".

U.S. Secretary of Treasury Steve Mnuchin testifies at a Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee hearing on May 15, 2019 in Washington.

The president's lawyers and White House are expected to challenge the move and have argued that Democrats' request does not serve a legitimate legislative objective, an argument the administration made in its rejection of the Democrats' initial request.
