RA reaches out to Polynesian players amid Israel Folau saga

  • Israel Folau has been found guilty of committing a

Folau's four-year contract with Rugby Australia was subsequently revoked, ending his club and global career in his home country and ending his hopes of participating in this year's World Cup in Japan.

Folau, a devout Christian who has made 73 worldwide appearances for the Wallabies, was found guilty of a code of conduct breach last week and could lose his contract following an Instagram post that said "hell awaits" gay people.

A three-person tribunal has retired to consider what sanction his actions merits, with its decision expected next week.

Folau faces the end of his professional rugby union career after saying gay people are going to hell in an Instagram post in April.

"I will never apologise for my faith and what I believe in, religion (has) got nothing to do with rugby anyway", he added.

"I got stood down with obviously, you know, by, posting up with what I did on social media and you know we're at a stage at the moment, it's not finished yet, but the outcome is yet to be known", he told his fellow Pentecostal worshippers.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper reported last week that Folau had turned down a A$1 million ($700,000) settlement offered by RA to walk away from his four-year contract, which is reported to be worth A$4 million.

"It's important and we're an inclusive game and they're a big part of our culture and our rugby culture, and we don't want to make it divisive".

"It's about spending time and understanding the issue, but what I have come across so far I think is respectful both ways and they're paid to play rugby, and I think they understand that".

What frustrates Johnson most is that the fallout from the Folau firestorm has taken the focus off rugby and what's happening on the field.

The judgement came more than three weeks after RA and Folau's Super Rugby club New South Wales Waratahs said they meant to terminate his four-year contract.

"That's the most frustrating thing and everything appears to be negative or a slant by an individual or a comment about the individual".
