Riders who want to keep conversation between themselves and their drivers to a minimum can select "quiet mode", and they can enjoy other perks like luggage service, freedom to choose a specific interior temperature, and extra time to find their driver's vehicle after it has arrived.
Depending on where you are, it's a toss-up whether your Uber driver will talk your ear off.
The features are rolling out as part of Uber's new list of 'ride preferences, ' which are expanded controls that are only available during premium rides.
Riders have been clamoring for a "quiet mode" for when you don't want to chat.
The driver will have to wait up to 15 minutes for the rider, instead of the usual 1-5 minutes.
Activists scale Sydney Harbour Bridge over climate change

Along with this feature, the app has also added "Premium support" so passengers can chat with live agents on the phone. To avoid this social awkwardness, Uber has introduced Quiet Mode.
Many of these preferences are something Uber riders have requested for years. Originally founded as a luxury auto service that could be booked through a smartphone app, Uber later introduced low-priced options like Uber Pool. The feature is only available with the premium Uber Black service, so customers using regular or UberPool services will still need to use their words to ask for quiet. "That's why we've improved features and requirements to meet or exceed their expectations on every ride", the news release states.
Uber's new feature should make it easier for users to have a quiet ride when it might otherwise be awkward to make that request to the driver's face. "The driver can have that information and do with it what they want".
The features will go live in Columbia and SC on Thursday and will roll out across the United States within few days.
