Amid continuing unrest in Venezuela, the U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday suspended all flights between the U.S. and the troubled South American nation.

Venezuela's Information Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. American Airlines was the last major U.S. carrier to suspend flights to and from Venezuela, back in March.

Many worldwide flights to Venezuela have already stopped service to the country due to the safety concerns and disputes with the country's embattled leader Nicolas Maduro.

"This determination is based on the ongoing political instability and increased tensions in Venezuela and associated inadvertent risk to flight operations", Homeland Security said.

In April, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration prohibited U.S. air operators from flying below 26,000 feet in Venezuela's airspace.

In January, the Trump administration recognized opposition politician Juan Guaido as "interim president" of Venezuela and called for President Nicolas Maduro to resign.
