Two sightseeing planes collided Monday afternoon off the coast of Alaska, leaving at least four people dead, the Coast Guard said. It's unclear which plane carried the fourth victim, whose body was recovered during a Monday night search, Rios said.

The US the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has given details about the seaplanes' final moments in the air, reports CBS. The planes came down about a mile and a half apart with some of the debris field on land.

The Federal Administration Aviation says a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and a de Havilland Otter DHC-3, carrying a total of 14 passengers, collided under unknown circumstances. Six people were injured in the crash landings near Ketchikan while conducting sightseeing tours in George Inlet.

In June 2015, a pilot and eight passengers had died when a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter, operated by Promech Air Inc, crashed into mountainous terrain about 39km from Ketchikan.

He had been married to his wife Stephanie for 31 years, family told 9News, and had two children.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the Canadian citizen who died in Alaska", a spokesperson from Global Affairs Canada said in an earlier statement to Daily Hive.

The recovery of the planes' wreckage is underway.

A spokeswoman for Taquan Air, operator of the Otter, said the company had suspended operations while federal authorities investigate the deadly crash.

Investigators say they plan to interview the surviving pilot, passengers and witnesses.

The Royal Princess left Vancouver for Anchorage on Saturday and was to return on May 25.

10 others were taken to hospital after two float planes collided mid-air, crashing into the water in Ketchickan.

The second plane was carrying four passengers and a pilot on an independent tour, the cruise line said.

The US Coast Guard said three people were confirmed dead and that it was searching for three others, with help from the US Forest Service and Alaska state troopers.

Local plane company Taquan Air, which operated one of the flights, said it was "devastated" by the news and was suspending all scheduled flights, according to the channel. The other, carrying 11 people landed in the water, but started to sink. Four were later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, suffering various broken bones, spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Princess Cruises spokesman Brian O'Conner said the company was extending its full support to investigating authorities as well as to the travelling companions of the guests involved.

"Our community is heartbroken over this tragedy and its devastating impact on so many families", said Ketchikan Gateway Borough Mayor David Landis in the borough's prepared statement.

The Royal Princess cruise is now sailing on a seven-day "Voyage of the Glaciers" cruise that departed from Vancouver on May 11.
