After A (Partial) Win In Court, Woodstock 50 May Still Go On

  • Woodstock 50 is completely broke but somehow still going ahead

Judge Barry Ostrager found that Dentsu, an advertising and marketing agency based in Japan, and its subsidiary Amplifi, did have a "control option" to assume control over the music festival should the concert organizers fail to show an ability to actually put on the show.

Which brings us to today: Billboard is reporting that a judge has ruled that while Denstu don't have to give Michael Lang back his $18-ish million dollars, they also don't have the right to cancel the festival outright.

Everything going on with Woodstock 50 over the past few weeks, it seems like the festival is about to share a similar fate as Fyre Festival. State Supreme Court Justice Barry Ostrager agreed with Woodstock co-founder and Woodstock 50 organizer Michael Lang that Dentsu didn't have the right to unilaterally "cancel" the August 16-18 event at Watkins Glen International in Upstate New York.

According to Pitchfork, a judge has ruled that Woodstock 50 can move forward after Dentsu Aegis, the festival's investors, claimed that it was called off.

"Woodstock 50 is on!"

Dentsu said in a statement that while the court had ruled that Amplifi Live could not unilaterally cancel the festival "at this time we do not intend to further invest in the festival". "We have one of the greatest lineups of talent of any music festival, and we are grateful to all of the talent for their loyalty and support". Festival founder Michael Lang echoed those sentiments, saying "We have always relied on the truth and have never lost faith that the Festival would take place".

Lang's lawyer, former Trump attorney Marc Kasowitz, said Monday that Woodstock 50 is broke and needs the money within days to stage the festival less than 100 days from now. I would like to thank all of the talent and their representatives for their patience and support. "Woodstock 50 will be an fantastic and inspiring festival experience", Lang promised.

On top of needing investors, tickets for Woodstock 50 still have not gone on sale, the state has not yet approved a mass gathering permit, and there are still concerns about the capacity of Watkins Glen.

According to court filings, among the red flags Amplifi Live raised with the festival included the fact that "multiple permits necessary to conduct the festival were not in place, tickets had not yet been sold, no budget had been agreed upon, necessary and expensive structural improvements to the festival site and related areas had not yet started and the production company essential to produce the festival had withdrawn".

Woodstock 50 announced in March that more than 80 musical acts, including 1969 festival veterans John Fogerty, Canned Heat and Santana, would take part.
