Corbyn left the door slightly open to doing a deal with the government - but only if May makes "significant changes", he said in a statement.

But ahead of the talks, committee treasurer Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said: "It would be infinitely preferable if she set a date rather than us force her out". It's now nearly certain that it will be May's successor who completes the U.K.'s departure from the European Union and the next months will see Conservatives choose a leader in a ballot that could define the terms of the divorce.

"We have agreed that she and I will meet following the second reading (first vote) of the bill to agree to a timetable for the election of a new leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party", he said. But six weeks of hard negotiations yielded little and Labour was increasingly concerned that a future Conservative leader wouldn't stand by any promises May made.

Meanwhile, Mrs May held talks with senior Tories at Westminster amid growing pressure for her to name the date of her departure. Many blame May for the impasse and want her replaced with a more staunchly pro-Brexit leader such as the former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson.

Referencing those developments, Corbyn wrote that, "the position of the government has become ever more unstable and its authority eroded" stating the party would continue to oppose May's deal.

And with May set to announce within weeks that she plans to step down, Corbyn said the "increasing weakness and instability" of the government made striking a lasting agreement impossible.

May agreed on Thursday to set out a timetable for her departure in early June, after a fourth and final attempt to push her Brexit deal through parliament.

May and Labour may try to agree on a process for parliamentary votes created to find a consensus, the BBC reported.

"It's better that she does it than we have a vote of confidence".

May said Friday that British lawmakers "will be faced with a stark choice: that is to vote to. deliver Brexit, or to shy away again from delivering Brexit with all the uncertainty that that would leave". He has not been shy of voicing his disapproval for her Brexit deal, and is widely expected to throw some grenades into the debate.

"In particular, we have not been able to overcome the fact that there isn't a common position in Labour about whether they want to deliver Brexit or hold a second referendum, which could reverse it", she said. In 2018 the recess ran from July 24 to September 4. He later told reporters there was no chance of getting even part of a Brexit deal ratified by the end of July. In the past it has taken months to complete but it could be speeded up in order to give the new leader more time to try to resolve the Brexit impasses before October 31.

The decision comes as little surprise as Johnson, one of Britain's most identifiable politicians known simply as "Boris", has always been known to covet the top job.

On Friday, May urged the public to stick with her party and reject Farage.

But she said: "No-one else can get the job done".

"I'm very pleased as a leader of the Brexit Party to welcome four members of the Welsh Assembly who will now re-designate as of this afternoon as Brexit Party members".
