Florida prepares for influx of immigrants from Mexico border

  • Trump sending '500 migrants a month' to Florida Democratic strongholds

Ron DeSantis said Friday the state isn't prepared to handle vague Trump administration plans to send some 1,000 undocumented immigrants a month from the southern border to South Florida. "Florida counties do not have the resources to accommodate an influx of illegal immigrants", the aide said. He said he was told that the plan was to fly immigrants in from the border, process them through immigrations, give them a notice to appear in court and then set them free into South Florida without accommodations.

But the governor's statements Friday show that, like numerous state's politicians - some of them President Donald Trump's close allies - he remains mostly in the dark about the details of a hugely controversial proposal. Along the entire U.S. -Mexico border, 10,910 Cubans came through official crossings between October and April, versus 7,079 in the previous 12 months. "We think it's a danger for this community", said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw in a joint press conference with Palm Beach County Mayor Mack Bernard.

"I believe it's purely political - the president has made it clear that he is targeting Democratic stronghold areas, and Broward fits that criteria", state Rep. Shevrin Jones, a West Park Democrat, said.

He said the sheriff told him they will be released pending an asylum hearing.

"If so many people are coming to Palm Beach County we may have to declare a national emergency", Bernard said. "It will cost us money, yes, but our soul will remain intact".

Local officials stressed that they had not been consulted before the plans were announced to them. "Although our commission has not had the chance to address this issue, in my opinion, the people that we can't find shelter for and will become homeless, I would suggest, that we bring them to the Trump hotels and ask the president to open his heart and home as well". "It's gonna ultimately be something I'm going to have to talk to the president about", DeSantis said. There's been no migrants brought, released, in Florida. He said it is important that Palm Beach County authorities and institutions play an active role in aiding any migrants who end up there.

Iran Could Iraq play a role in easing US-Iran tensions?
Iraq's status as an area of shared influence between Iran and the United States leaves the country's leaders with few options. The sanctions were introduced by president Trump due to Iran developing nuclear weapons and threatening allies like Israel.

According to NBC 6, Broward Mayor Mark Bogen said the administration will send two planes a week to South Florida carrying a total of 270 migrants as part of its effort to relieve the migrant population along the Texas border.

"There is a crisis at the border that is leading to a flood of immigrants, but Democrats refuse to help fix it", Chris Hartline, a spokesman for U.S. Sen.

Scott, who served as Governor from 2011 until early this year, has reached out to local sheriffs and is contacting the White House and the Department of Homeland Security to get more details, Hartline added.

Gamwell said his organization already acts as a community service hub for migrants in the county. "We're not going to be like some of these other states that are not allowing federal authorities to come into a jail or a courthouse", he said.

On Friday, DeSantis stated, "The disaster that we're seeing at the border, that is a disaster created by the policies that were enacted by the Congress of the United States". "We are Palm Beach County in the state of Florida".

"The Governor's office was not informed of this decision", he told the media. (The "surge" is still smaller than previous peaks during the early 2000s, plus migrants have a legal right to seek asylum at foreign borders; critics note that in many cases, Central American migrants are fleeing violence and despair caused partly by American foreign-policy decisions.) In addition to trying to build a wall between the States and Mexico, Trump has tried to make it more hard for immigrants to seek legal asylum and just yesterday said in a speech he wants the United States to give green cards only to people with high levels of education or those who pass "patriotism tests".
