John Daly Makes PGA Championship Presence Felt with Cigarette, McDonald's in Hand

  • John Daly a fan favourite at PGA, with or without cart

The 1991 PGA Championship victor, who was allowed to use a motorized cart at Bethpage Black after receiving permission from the PGA's Americans With Disabilities Act committee, posted a 6-over 76 on Friday, for a 36-hole total of 11-over.

Maybe those trousers will bring luck to Daly, who won the PGA Championship back in 1991.

"Trust me, if I could walk I would rather walk".

"It's very awkward, to a point it's nearly embarrassing, but I love the PGA, and I feel like as past champion I belong to play".

"At least I finally made a birdie", Daly said. He did so with a McDonald's cup in a cup holder, a Diet Coke bottle in the other and his seemingly endless packs of cigarettes floating around.

After the heavy-set Daly saved par with a short putt following a 30-yard shot out of the front bunker on the par-4 15th, the crowd cheered. "I can't go up past my ball and I can't drive up and come back, but I never do that on the senior tour", he explained. And the PGA gave him some suggested routes, but Daly said he improvised in some instances. "And the Yankees trousers I love it!" "I feel obligated", the 1991 champion said after shooting five-over-par 75. "Thought it'd be good to wear them here".

Tournament officials are considering John Daly's request to use a buggy in this year's Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

"I wouldn't be able to", said the 53-year-old American. "Ireland is big on the ADA, like most countries should be". I could probably walk four holes and be done.

"I'm not one that wants to ride all the time". I just do. It got me started in my career.

But now that the tournament is underway, it's clear to see that the cart is a thing of beauty and it's becoming a break out star of this major. Martin had a birth defect that limited the circulation to his legs.

Daly said he has no meniscus in his right knee, making it very hard to walk down hills, but not up them. He said his knee was "the size of a grapefruit" after the round, and planned to ice it and hope it's feeling better Friday. Daly said the vehicle is necessary due to osteoarthritis in his right knee. I enjoy playing and I'm still competitive. "It's very special to me and I just feel like I need to play, or try to anyway". "He may be in too much pain to take any extra swings that don't count towards his score, but it was not exactly a rigorous routine to get dialed in before a major championship round".
