  • Rafael Nadal of Spain has come under fire from Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has been defaulted from his second round Italian Open clash against Norway's Casper Ruud after the hot-headed Australian hurled a chair on to the court.

Kyrgios blew up at the crowd after his opponent, Caspar Rudd, tied him in the third set.

During the match in question against Mischa Zverev, Kyrgios also argued with a fan and received a code violation for swearing, after which he was fined for breaching the ATP code of conduct.

He kicked the ground in frustration, threw his racket on the floor and proceeded to throw a chair into the middle of the court, leaving onlookers in a state of shock as he shouted: "I'm done".

ATP Tour supervisor Gerry Armstrong informed Kyrgios that he was defaulting the match before the latter packed up his bag and left the court, adds Clarey.

The Australian's outburst comes just a day after he launched an astonishing attack on some of the biggest names in tennis as part of a podcast at the Rome event.

Nick Kyrgios has shredded Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and other tennis rivals in an incredible interview.

In 2015, Kyrgios insulted Stan Wawrinka with crude remarks during a match in Montreal.

"No matter how many grand slams he wins, he will never be the greatest for me simply because I've played him twice and, I'm sorry, but if you can't beat me, you're not the greatest of all time". The Swiss was more aggressive and he efficiently defended the second serve before seizing the only chance on the return he got. He's a champion of the sport, one of the greatest we'll ever see, I think he will pass Federer [in terms of grand slam wins]. He hurt a chair?

"Because if you look at my day-to-day routine and how much I train and how much I put in, it's zero compared to him". I don't know if he's on probation or not from his Shanghai thing.

"The celebration just kills me".

His observations on Nadal, a 17-time grand slam victor, and Djokovic, who has 15 majors, were dynamite.

Federer saved all seven break points he faced to beat Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-3, then was to play Borna Coric for a spot in the quarterfinals. He was also fined an extra £20,000 for his misdemeanours and told...

"It's nice to get lucky sometimes", Federer said.

"I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks he should be suspended for at least half a year", the 76th-ranked Norwegian said postmatch, according to Ben Rothenberg of The New York Times.
