A South African and three British passengers aboard the plane died.

Dubai International Airport is the world's busiest when measured by international passenger traffic.

The report said the small DA42 plane was owned by Flight Calibration Services Limited, a company based out of Shoreham Airport.

"An accident involving a small plane with four passengers occurred resulting in the death of the pilot and his assistant".

The last major aircraft incident in Dubai happened in August 2016, when an Emirates Boeing 777-300 crash landed after flying in from Thiruvananthapuram, India.

Dubai International has one of the safest records of any major airport.

An airport spokesman said: "Dubai Airports can confirm that operations at Dubai International were suspended from 19.36pm to 8.22pm UAE local time due to an incident involving a small non-commercial aircraft in the vicinity of the airport".

U.S. engineering and aerospace company Honeywell said it had hired Flight Calibration Services and the DA42 plane for work in Dubai.

The DA42, which has an all-carbon airframe, has a maximum speed of 226mph, can operate at a maximum altitude of 18,000ft and weighs 1,410kg, according to the Diamond website. It was owned by the American conglomerate, Honeywell.

The victims include three United Kingdom nationals and a South African, GCAA said in a statement.
