  • Australian election Polls open in key contest

Pre-election opinion polls had suggested the coalition would lose its bid for a third three-year term, and that Mr Morrison would have had one of the shortest tenures as prime minister in the 118-year history of the Australian federation.

Senior Labor figures began lining up on Sunday for the leadership after the centre-left party lost what some commentators called an "unlosable" election.

Former prime minister John Howard said Mr Morrison "deserves the overwhelming gratitude of the Liberals all around the country". Since then, public expectations have taken a roller coaster ride based on the media's reporting of polls. "How good is Australia and how good are Australians", said Morrison. The Nine newspapers - The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald - say Labor offers a better chance at stability, but warn against going too far with reforms.

"That indicates 'herding, ' where the pollsters themselves are getting results that they don't think are right and are adjusting them", Jackson said. "Because statistically, polls should never come up like that".

Shorten predicts a Labor victory.

"It's not possible to tell exactly how the current polls are being conducted because they don't have the same method statement that polls in the past have had", O'Shannessy said.

A federal election will be held in Australian on Saturday May 18, 2019.

Morrison's predecessor, Turnbull, justified overthrowing his predecessor, Tony Abbott, in 2015 on the basis of "30 losing Newspolls".

Former Labor senator Sam Dastyari, who remains close with many in the party, has described "panic stations" at Labor Party headquarters this evening. "That is something that no doubt will be examined over coming days and weeks".

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on Monday said Morrison's coalition has won 76 seats in Australia's parliament, which is comprised of 151 elected lawmakers.

He urged voters not to risk a change of government just when the economy - in its 28th year of uninterrupted growth - appears to be running out of steam.

Though a small number of ballots still have left to be counted, the coalition looks set to have won at least 74 out of 151 lower house seats, now falling short of the 76 seats needed to form a majority government, but still outperforming the other parties. Morrison has since claimed to have re-united the party.

In the end, Morris said, "the power of the message-deliverer in this election was more powerful than the message".

The Reserve Bank of Australia, which has kept the benchmark interest rate at a record low 1.5% since August 2016, is under pressure to cut again.

He confirmed he called Prime Minister Scott Morrison to congratulate him on the win.

A key Morrison ally, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, paid tribute to his leader's campaigning for securing the victory.

"The prime minister led from the front", Frydenberg told ABC TV. "He was able to straddle the Queensland pro-coal folk and also those who are a bit more for renewables and the like".

"He crisscrossed the country with great energy, belief, and conviction".

"Today is the people's day", he said.

The defeated opposition Labor party campaigned on more aggressive targets, aiming to cut carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and reach 50 percent renewable power by 2030.

"I am quietly confident that there is a mood to vote for real change", Shorten told reporters in his hometown of Melbourne on Saturday.

The battle in those districts was complicated by the growing support for populist, single-issue parties, which tapped into voter disaffection after a chaotic decade of infighting in both the mainstream parties led to six changes of prime minister since 2007. "That's how this was considered", one reporter told worldwide media from an Australian Labor party election celebration Friday evening.
