The activists arrived at the St James' Square offices before dawn and stopped staff from entering by blockading its five entrances with specially designed containers each holding 2 people.

Officers have not yet made any arrests and roads remain open.

The activists have accused BP of "fuelling a climate emergency that threatens millions of lives".

Writing on Twitter, they wrote: "We've met with BP several times but they're still continuing a business which is incompatible with a healthy & prosperous future". They are fuelling a #ClimateEmergency that threatens millions of lives. "BP must clean up or clear out".

"This is a Climate Emergency - BP need to end the search for new oil and gas now and start a rapid switch to 100% renewables".

Paul Morozzo, an activist who is occupying one of the containers, said: "We're shutting down BP's headquarters because business as usual is just not an option". The science is clear: we must stop searching for new oil and gas if we want a livable planet.

City A.M. has asked BP for comment.

Militants Attack Troops at Libya Army Checkpoint
Libya has been under an arms embargo since the 2011 uprising which led to the ousting and killing of dictator Moamer Kadhafi. The media arm of Haftar's LNA said in a statement a "terrorist attack" had been repelled but did not give any details.

Speaking to The Guardian by phone from inside of one of the containers-which were put in place using cranes early Monday morning-Morozzo said the metal boxes were created to be impossible to move without harming those on the inside.

A team of activists abseiled from the top of the building and placed huge letters over the windows reading "CLIMATE EMERGENCY".

It comes ahead of BP's AGM which will be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) tomorrow as the energy major faces increasing pressure on climate targets.

BP this year backed a resolution being put to investors on Tuesday for it to be more transparent about its emissions, link executive pay to reducing emissions from BP's operations and show how future investments meet the 2015 Paris climate agreement to limit global warming.

Activists are blocking the entrances to BP's London HQ.

They also targeted the London Stock Exchange and Canary Wharf Station, glueing themselves to the LSE and also to two Docklands Light Railway trains.
