Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has issued an emotional statement after his restaurant chain collapsed into administration, putting at least 1300 jobs at risk.

"I'm devastated that our much-loved United Kingdom restaurants have gone into administration", said Oliver.

Now the exact scale of those difficulties has been truly revealed as the decision has been by the saddened chef to appoint KPMG administrators for Jamie's Italian chain, Barbecoa and Fifteen.

Oliver said in a statement that Jamie's Italian was launched in 2008 "with the intention of positively disrupting mid-market dining in the UK High Street" with better quality ingredients, better service and good value.

"And we did exactly that", he said.

The process does not affect Mr Oliver's other companies, which handle his media and licensing deals, while the worldwide branch of Jamie's Italian is also unaffected.

Ryanair posts weakest annual profits in four years
Ryanair said today that its full year profits fell by 29% to €1.02 billion, while its revenues grew by 6% to €7.56 billion. Ryanair's board has also approved a €700m share buyback which will commence later this week and run over the next year.

A spokesperson for the restaurant group said: "The board of Jamie's Italian Limited has appointed Will Wright and Mark Orton of KPMG to put its UK-based restaurant business into administration. Fifteen Cornwall, which operates under a franchise, is also unaffected". The procedures do not affect Jamie Oliver's worldwide business.

Jamie had pumped £13 million of his own money into the chain. His YouTube channel has more than 4.3 million subscribers.

Oliver rose to fame on the back of his popular TV show "The Naked Chef", which hit screens 20 years ago when he was just 23.

In an interview a year ago, Oliver was cited by the Daily Mail as saying high street restaurants were in a struggle for survival.

According to Companies House, Jamie Oliver Holdings Ltd - the umbrella company under which he runs his myriad businesses - turned over £32 million a year ago - a staggering £87,670 a day.

In the previous year, the chef put in £3 million of his own money to keep his current restaurant business float. In October 2017, his food magazine, Jamie, ceased publication after nearly 10 years. "Faced with higher rent, rising food prices and increased competition, restaurants need a point of difference-it's no coincidence that smaller brands with the freedom and flexibility to keep things fresh are now the ones performing well", Simon Mydlowski, a partner at the law firm Gordons, told the BBC.
