  • DR Congo Prominent opposition leader Katumbi returns from exile

Democratic Republic of Congo opposition leader Moise Katumbi, who was barred from running in presidential elections, returned home after a court last month overturned a prison sentence.

Forming a new government has taken months, in part because of disagreements over the appointment of a Prime Minister. Katumbi has been living in exile in Belgium for three years after he was charged by former president Joseph Kabila's government of several crimes including fraud, hiring foreign mercenaries and illegally acquiring a second citizenship.

DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has named Sylvestre Ilunga Ilukamba as the new prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Tshisekedi has pardoned 700 prisoners including three political opponents of his predecessor Joseph Kabila since coming to power in January.

The country's politics remain overshadowed by Kabila, who amassed extensive clout after 18 years in power.

Katumbi was an ally of Tshisekedi during much of his self-imposed exile, but ultimately chose to back rival opposition candidate Martin Fayulu in the run-up to the vote.

Katumbi previously served as the governor of Katanga province from 2007 to 2015.

His political allies retain the upper hand in parliament, provincial assemblies and governorships across the unstable country.

"The truth always triumphs in the end", Katumbi, the owner and president of the renowned TP ("All Powerful") Mazemba football club, told his fans at the airport.

Katumbi had been sentenced in absentia to three years in prison on real estate fraud charges he said were politically motivated. Katumbi, 54, was greeted by tens of thousands of supporters as his plane touched down Monday at the airport of Lubumbashi, the capital of Haut-Katanga province.
