McDonalds stops sales of milkshakes and McFlurries amid Brexit rally

Concerned cops ordered a McDonald's branch in Edinburgh to stop selling milkshakes because Farage was in town, the restaurants staff said.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Britain's Brexit Party, was doused in milkshake by a protestor on Monday, the latest anti-EU figure to be targeted during campaigning for the European parliament elections.

Earlier this month a video of English Defence League founder Tommy Robison being struck by milkshake during a visit to Warrington, Cheshire, was widely shared online.

There were concerns protesters might throw milkshakes and ice creams at the far-right politician and his supporters.

It was one of two incidents in which Robinson, who is running as an MEP, had a milkshake thrown over him in two days on the campaign trail. They subsequently confirmed that the milkshake was thrown over Benjamin around half an hour later. He is now being investigated by police over comments speculating about whether he should rape a female MP.

A spokesperson for McDonald's was quick to confirm they had complied with the police request they stop sales of milkshakes and McFlurries on Friday evening. "This is due to a police request given recent events" were displayed on the windows and inside the fast food restaurant.

McDonalds biggest rival Burger King responded saying "Dear people of Scotland".

Burger King followed up its cheeky tweet with another clarifying it wasn't advocating anything untoward. "So enjoy the weekend and please drink responsibly people", the account said.

Farage, a 55-year-old former commodities broker, played an instrumental role in persuading Britain's mainstream political parties to hold a referendum on leaving the European Union in 2016, and then convincing voters to back Brexit during the subsequent campaign.

CNN has contacted McDonald's for comment.
