Many homes and business turned into piles of rubble in a matter of moments, but it's not just tornadoes that's causing hazards.

Late Monday, the National Weather Service reduced the severe threat of violent storms to a small area of southern Oklahoma and northern Texas.

"Take cover NOW!" a forecaster wrote in the tweet.

U.S. southern plains states face more tornadoes, hail and heavy rain after at least 19 twisters tore through parts of Texas and Oklahoma, but the storm system was not as severe as originally feared, the National Weather Service said on Tuesday. That line of storms is expected to move east of Dallas by mid morning Tuesday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that there is a high risk of flash flooding in and around Oklahoma City and a medium risk of flash flooding in southern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, northwestern Arkansas, and a portion of northern Texas.

The tornadoes that were reported Monday were in sparsely populated areas.

School districts across Oklahoma have cancelled classes on Monday in anticipation of the storm.

The heavy rain associated with this storm system means a threat of flooding across nearly the entire state of Missouri, which extends east into western IL and north into southeast Iowa, where flood watches are in effect. Schools in Abilene and elsewhere in West Texas sent their students home early. Tinker Air Force Base, near Oklahoma City, evacuated some aircraft.

The office of the Oklahoma governor, Kevin Stitt, said in a statement that the state's emergency operations center had been activated and that an advance team from the Federal Emergency Management Agency had been brought in to "help facilitate the delivery of any federal resources that may be needed".
