  • The ban will include exemptions to ensure that those with medical needs or a disability are able to continue to access plastic straws

It's estimated that in people in England use 4.7 billion plastic straws every year, along with 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds - around 10 per cent of which are flushed down the toilet and end up in waterways and oceans.

Maddy Haughton-Boakes, Litter Campaigner at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), added: "While it is fantastic news that the government has taken such decisive action over plastic straws, stirrers, and cotton buds, we are deeply disappointed that Michael Gove hasn't taken this opportunity to ban these unnecessary items all together, whatever the material".

Michael Gove, the environment secretary, confirmed the ban yesterday as the European Union announced that member states would introduce a much wider ban on single-use plastic items in two years' time.

Michael Gove confirmed the plastic straw ban.

People who need plastic straws for medical reasons or a disability will be allowed to buy them from registered pharmacies or request them in restaurants, pubs and bars.

It is hoped millions of pounds could be saved annually on clean-up efforts of used plastics.

Urgent and decisive action is needed to tackle plastic pollution and protect our environment.

DR Congo Gets New Prime Minister
Katumbi had been sentenced in absentia to three years in prison on real estate fraud charges he said were politically motivated. Forming a new government has taken months, in part because of disagreements over the appointment of a Prime Minister.

"So today I am taking action to turn the tide on plastic pollution, and ensure we leave our environment in a better state for future generations".

It is estimated there are more than 150 million tonnes of plastic in the world's oceans and every year one million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals die from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste.

The announcement follows the Government's ban on microbeads and the 5p charge on single-use plastic bags, which has seen distribution by major supermarkets drop by 86%. It's a really positive and bold step in the right direction in the battle against plastic pollution.

Surfers Against Sewage chief executive Hugo Tagholm welcomed the ban.

Lauren West, Trailblazers manager at Muscular Dystrophy UK, said: "If disabled people cannot access plastic straws when out it could put their health at risk as they may not be able to drink and could become dehydrated". He said: "Single use plastic is a disease of our own making".

"We're pleased the Government has recognised this in its proposals put forward today".
