UK Government To Ban Plastic Straws, Stirrers And Cotton Buds By 2020

It's estimated that in people in England use 4.7 billion plastic straws every year, along with 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds - around 10 per cent of which are flushed down the toilet and end up in waterways and oceans.
Maddy Haughton-Boakes, Litter Campaigner at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), added: "While it is fantastic news that the government has taken such decisive action over plastic straws, stirrers, and cotton buds, we are deeply disappointed that Michael Gove hasn't taken this opportunity to ban these unnecessary items all together, whatever the material".
Michael Gove, the environment secretary, confirmed the ban yesterday as the European Union announced that member states would introduce a much wider ban on single-use plastic items in two years' time.

People who need plastic straws for medical reasons or a disability will be allowed to buy them from registered pharmacies or request them in restaurants, pubs and bars.
It is hoped millions of pounds could be saved annually on clean-up efforts of used plastics.
