  • Mississippi Rep. Doug McLeod R-Lucedale allegedly punched his wife in the face when she took too long to undress when he wanted to have sex according to a police report

A MS lawmaker is accused of drunkenly punching his wife in the face, and all because cops say he didn't think she undressed for sex quickly enough. "These actions are unacceptable for anyone".

"Are you kidding me?" the lawmaker told deputies when they showed up at his home on Bexley Church Road in Lucedale.

The 58-year-old went back inside, yelling that "the cops are here", before going back to the front door, the report said. Deputies report McLeod had punched his wife and bloodied her nose.

Blood was found on the couple's bed and their bedroom floor, but McLeod tried to insist that nothing was wrong before saying something undecipherable to deputies due to his inebriation, the report states.

Mississippi's House speaker, Republican Philip Gunn, said in a statement Tuesday that McLeod should resign if the allegations are true, calling them "unacceptable for anyone". McLeod was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, and released on $1,000 bond.

McLeod has not commented since his arrest over the weekend despite repeated calls and emails from the Sun Herald.

Investigators said the state lawmaker "had slurred speech and walked slow in a zigzag pattern".

McLeod faces re-election later this year, but is now running unopposed. McLeod's wife eventually came outside after deputies assured her they would keep her away from her husband.

After McLeod allegedly hit his wife, she ran to another woman's room to hide from her husband.

Police saw two women inside the home at the top of a staircase, both appearing to be frightened.

McLeod then attempted to convince deputies that everything was all right. She told deputies that the state rep of seven years was drunk and "just snapped", a common occurrence when he's drinking, according to the report. The unidentified other woman alleged McLeod began to bang on the door, telling the women to open it.

In response to his arrest, MS officials - Democrats and Republicans alike - asked the state representative to step down. The woman said McLeod started banging on the door and threatened to "kill her (expletive) dog" if she didn't open it, according to the Sun Herald.

George County Sheriff Keith Havard said the investigation is continuing.
