A violent tornado hit Missouri's capital Jefferson City late Wednesday night, leaving three people dead, according to Missouri Governor Mike Parson on Thursday morning.

Many in Jefferson City considered themselves fortunate to survive.

A quick-moving tornado moving southwest at 40 miles per hour hit Jefferson City, Missouri, late Wednesday night, shooting debris 13,000 feet into the air, injuring at least 20 and ravaging buildings across the state's capital, NPR reported on Thursday, and the Missouri State High School Athletic Association as a result has temporarily suspended the Class 3-4-5 State Track and Field Championships set for this weekend in the city. The capital city has a population of about 40,000 and is located about 130 miles (209 kilometers) west of St. Louis.

The weather service received reports of more than a dozen tornadoes, along with numerous reports of large hail and torrential rain.

Officials said a female driver drowned after ignoring a barricade about 45 miles northeast of Oklahoma City - and in Iowa, a 74-year-old woman died from another possible tornado. Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Cain said she isn't yet listed as what would be the state's first storm-related death. Catastrophic flooding in the area even swept some homes into a river.
