The recall was issued because metal burrs may reside into the metal core of the steering wheel, which can cause damage to the cable reel sub-harness that may lead to a short circuit and overheating of the components. The automaker says there have been six instances of the unwarranted airbag inflations leading to three injuries, but so far no reported crashes.

The automaker said it is recalling the 2019 Honda CR-V to replace steering wheel wire harnesses and supplemental restraint system cable reels after six driver airbag deployments occurred without a crash.

Honda is going to recall more than 118,000 new SUV's in the US after three people reportedly got hurt when the air bags suddenly deployed.

Honda began notifying its dealers of the issue May 22 and said that it will begin alerting owners of affected vehicles around July 8.

The first incident of unintended deployment occurred in late February, and it appears the airbag has gone off without warning on at least five additional occasions since then. Any vehicle manufactured after April 1 has the updated version of the steering wheel and should not experience the issue, Honda says.

Once at the dealership, fix technicians will replace the cable reel and cable reel sub-harness, and install a protective cover on the steering wheel core at no cost.

Honda is recalling 137,000 units of its popular CR-V SUV to address a potential safety defect that could cause the vehicle's driver air bag to deploy inadvertently.
