Facebook has been reported to be working on its own cryptocurrency since a while, and now a new report suggests that it should be launched as soon as next year.

The social media giant is planning to set up a digital payments system - which has been named internally as GlobalCoin - in more than 10 countries by 2020. The BBC said Facebook had already spoken to Bank of England governor Mark Carney and to officials at the US Treasury, and was expected to flesh out its plans this northern hemisphere summer.

Aside from Gemini, Facebook reportedly has had talks with another cryptocurrency exchange, CoinBase, as well as high-frequency trading firms Jump and DRW.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly talked to Britain's central banker about launching a cryptocurrency. The Winklevoss twins famously sued Zuckerberg for allegedly stealing the idea for Facebook while the trio were classmates at Harvard University, ultimately receiving a $65 million settlement. Now, the Winklevoss twins have become billionaires via investment into bitcoin and founding the Gemini digital currency exchange, with plans to launch a Gemini dollar cryptocurrency in the future.

Previous reports have said Facebook is taking a serious look at blockchain technology under its "Project Libra", in part to tackle doubts about privacy among its many users following a series of scandals.

News of Facebook developing its own digital currency first surfaced at the end of 2018.
