Bali's airport has returned to normal operations after some flights were cancelled on Friday night following an eruption of the Mount Agung volcano that spread ash over the south of the Indonesian island.

Flights to and from the popular holiday destination were disrupted overnight on Friday as a result of the volcanic blast, with some travelers stranded overnight at the airport before flights resumed on Saturday.

Flights, run by Qantas Airways, JetStar and Virgin Airlines, were operating normally on Saturday.

Flights departing from Sydney for Bali's Denpasar Airport are scheduled to leave on time at this stage. A Jetstar flight from Adelaide to Denpasar was diverted to Darwin following the eruption.

Mount Agung is situated in Karangasem district and is about 70km from tourist hub Kuta.

The intensity of volcanic ash rain has dropped from 4000-5000 metres in height within the Bali airport's air space to 500-1000 metres in height, said Head of the Bali Region IV airport authority, Elfi Amir. No fatalities were reported. The volcano then became dormant for decades, before suddenly entering a new period of activity in 2017.

The volcano spewed lava as far as three kilometers, and nine villages experienced thick ash fall. Its current alert level is the third from the four-tiered system. Locals living along the rivers at the foot of the volcano have also been warned to watch for possible lava flow that could come on rainy days.
