Theresa May has announced she is to stand down as leader of the Conservative party triggering a new leadership contest and paving the way for a new Prime Minister. The second female Prime Minister but certainly not the last.

However, Prisons Minister Robert Buckland expressed concern about a no-deal exit from the EU.

Tory MP George Hollingbery said Mrs May was disappointed in herself.

If only one candidate comes forward, he or she becomes leader, but a coronation appears unlikely given the crowded field of leadership hopefuls already jostling for position. "But leaving a legacy is not her style".

Digital Minister Margot James has raised questions over how representative the Tory membership set to elect the new party leader is of Conservative voters.

"As the Prime Minister, she could go to the House of Lords if she wants to go that route and carry on, or she could stay a Member of Parliament".
