Hundreds of young climate change activists from across schools and colleges in Bengaluru gathered at Town Hall in the city, on Friday evening, to demand that the government declare a "climate emergency" in the country.

Made up predominantly of students, around 50 were in attendance as placards and signs were held aloft calling on politicians to take decisive action on the matter.

Today, thousands of students participated in the worldwide school strike for climate change led by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Campaigners have also blocked roads, disrupted public transport and glued themselves together during ten days of protests in London to raise awareness of the issue. Marches are scheduled to take place in at least 119 countries. Organizers of the protest pointed out that the number of students who turned up for the event the second time was nearly 4 times double that of the gathering of March, this year. "All of us heard of the event through social media and through friends and the number of people who has stated that they would attend the event online was much higher". The hashtag has been shared over 7000 times in the past week and has had obvious influence amongst students. "We need to build a grassroots movement for change".

However, through all the theatrics of a protest, amidst the chants and cheers, it became clear this wasn't just for show - these students know what they're talking about.

Audi TT is dead, electric successor inbound

The "strike" is organised by "Youth Strike 4 Climate UK" and is part of 108 protests taking part across the UK.

A common theme among all the strikers was many will be too young to vote in next year's general election. "(Protesting) is all we really can do as young people", says 14-year-old Isabella. "We can actually get people to listen to us".

Much concern had been displayed by parents surrounding the conditions of the lie-in, with complaints that this form of protest was unsafe and disruptive to surrounding traffic.

Thunberg told thousands of supporters gathered in Stockholm's banking district on Friday that this week's European Union election should be focused on tackling climate change.
