Johanna Konta became the first British woman in 36 years to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals on Tuesday in a performance which left USA legend and seven-time Paris champion Chris Evert "speechless".

The seventh-seeded American clinched victory on her fifth match point, setting up an intriguing quarterfinal against Johanna Konta of Britain - herself through to the final eight at Roland Garros for the first time.

Konta has now reached the semifinals at three of the four major tournaments, but has yet to reach a final.

"To play on the new Chatrier court for the first time was wonderful especially against one of the world's best players", said Konta after her third win in 2019 over Stephens.

If she beats the 26th-seeded Konta, then her semifinal opponent will be either 31st-seeded Petra Martic of Croatia or unseeded 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova, a left-hander from the Czech Republic. "She executed a good game plan, and that was that". Her serve is big, her groundstrokes are big.

By reaching the last four, Konta has matched her own best grand slam performances at the Australian Open in 2016 and Wimbledon the following year, as well as the performance of Jo Durie, who was the last British woman to reach the last four here in 1983. I feel just really happy.

American tennis great Billie Jean King said on Wednesday she thinks Johanna Konta is playing "the best" she has in her career so far.

Konta hit 25 winners - more than twice as many as Stephens - and they were evenly distributed between her forehand (9) and backhand (8), with a few volleys mixed in, too.

"Yeah, obviously she played well".

"There is not much you can do when someone is playing like that".

A lot of credit must go to Konta's French coach Dimitri Zavialoff, who she began working with in October and who has imbued her with the self-belief to trust in her game and her decision-making.

Konta's aggressive returning game was impressive, but it was her service that really proved unstoppable, with the Brit winning over 80% if first serve points and giving Stephens little to no chance on a large number of points.
