The International Space Station Is Open for Commercial Business in Orbit

  • Got $50 million for a vacation? NASA to open space station to private citizens

So, rather than abandoning the aging laboratory, NASA is transitioning the station's operations to the private sector to stimulate the development of a low-Earth-orbit economy and give companies a place to demonstrate technologies needed for the 2024 moon landing.

Parts of the ISS will be opened for space tourism and commercial filming, according to The Washington Post.

NASA just announced today that it's opening the International Space Station to both tourists and commercial activities "so US industry innovation and ingenuity can accelerate a thriving commercial economy in low-Earth orbit".

Boeing and SpaceX are the contractors who are developing capsules to carry humans to the ISS and will be tasked with transporting private tourists for the one-off missions.

NASA has announced a plan to allow tourists to fly on the International Space Station for the first time starting next year.

Private astronauts will have to reimburse the government for the costs to the space station, including $11,250 a day for life support and toilets, and $22,500 a day for food, air and medical supplies.

A private mission on the International Space Station will cost a minimum of about $35,000 per night.

There will be up to two short private astronaut missions per year, said Robyn Gatens, the deputy director of the ISS.

The estimated price tag rings in at about $50 million for a seat, with companies charging about $35,000 for nightly expenses, according to WaPo. For now, Nasa is making one space station port available for commercial uses "for a finite period of time".

"Nasa is opening the International Space Station to commercial opportunities and marketing these opportunities as we've never done before", chief financial officer Jeff DeWit said in NY. US President Donald Trump published a budget past year which called for the station to be defunded by the government by 2025. Getting private astronauts to and from the space station will remain a large financial hurdle. In other words, in the future, NASA wants to be the buyer of low-Earth orbit services, not the seller.
