At least 26 civilians have been injured in a missile attack by Yemen's rebel Houthi movement on an airport in south-western Saudi Arabia, state media say.

"A total of 26 civilian passengers of different nationalities were injured by the projectile, including three (3) women (Yemeni, Indian, Saudi) and two (2) Saudi children", he added.

Maliki added that the attack had resulted in some physical damage to the airport hall.

Eight of those wounded at Abha airport were admitted to hospital, coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia leads a coalition of Arab states backing Yemen's government in its four-year war with the Houthis.

"It also proves that these terrorist militias have received new weapons, and that the Iranian regime continues its support and practice of cross-border terrorism and the continuing violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216 and Resolution 2231".

Al Malki concluded by saying that coalition forces will take urgent and timely measures to deter the militias from carrying out further attacks.

The Saudi coalition statement called it a "terrorist attack" and said that the rebels had used a "cruise missile" and targeted civilians.

Houthi-backed Al Masirah TV made the announcement and claimed the rebels had targeted the airport with a cruise missile.

Saudi Arabia accused Iran of ordering the attack, a charge that Tehran denies.

The latest attack, which is yet to be confirmed by the Saudis, comes a day after Riyadh said it intercepted two drones fired by the Iran-aligned group, which controls a large part of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa.

The airport serves both Dubai and Sharjah, as well as other locations around the Middle East.
