Activists scale 27,000 tonne oil rig during Highland protest

  • Greenpeace said a team of activists in boats drew up besides the 27,000-tonne rig as it was trying to leave Cromarty Firth

Greenpeace activists say they have scaled the 27,000-tonne rig - thought to be operated by BP - as it attempted to leave Cromarty Firth.

Greenpeace said its activists were occupying a gantry on one leg of the rig underneath its main deck, and had enough food for several days.

BP has estimated the drilling of new wells there could give them access to 30 million barrels of oil. BP says they care about climate change, yet they're pumping billions into the search for new oil while lobbying against tougher action on climate change.

Environmental campaigners have boarded an oil rig as it was being towed out to sea and are staging a protest onboard.

Jo, a Greenpeace activist from Scotland who is on board the rig, said: "Warm words flow from BP on their commitment to tackling climate change, yet this rig - and the 30 million barrels it seeks to drill - are a sure a sign that BP are committed to business as usual, fuelling a climate emergency that threatens millions of lives and the future of the living world".

Responding to the protest, a spokeswoman for BP told MailOnline: 'In all operations safety is our top priority.

It says scientists have been clear that we already have more oil and gas than we can safely burn under the Paris Agreement if we want to limit catastrophic climate change "yet BP maintains its desire to both explore for more and expand its oil and gas production".

Global carbon emissions rose at the fastest rate in seven years
The increase in United States oil and gas production was the largest-ever annual increase by any country, BP said. In the United States, the combined number of heating and cooling days was the highest since the 1950s, BP said.

Due to their 737 Max planes being grounded longer than was projected, American Airlines will have to cancel more than 110 flights every day.

'While we recognise the right for peaceful protest, the actions of this group are irresponsible and may put themselves and others unnecessarily at risk.

"That means the government must seriously reform the Oil & Gas Authority and instead invest heavily in the crucial work of helping oil communities like those in Scotland move from fossil fuels to the industries that will power our low carbon future".

A spokeswoman for BP claimed the company was playing its part and had cut its emissions by 1.7 million tonnes previous year.

"We are working with Transocean - the rig's owner and operator - and the authorities to assess the situation and resolve it peacefully and safely".

"We share the protestors" concerns about the climate. We support the Paris agreement.

'We are committed to being part of the solution to the climate challenge facing all of us'.
