Global carbon emissions rose at the fastest rate in seven years

Energy giant BP has warned efforts to tackle climate are losing steam after global carbon emissions grew unexpectedly and at their fastest pace in almost a decade past year.

"At a time when society is increasing concerns about climate change and the need for action, energy demand and carbon emissions are growing at their fastest rate for years", Dale said at a press briefing in London, according to the Guardian.

Global carbon emissions grew by 2.0 per cent previous year, the highest rate since 2010-2011, a closely-watched review by energy giant BP said on Tuesday, calling the trend "unsustainable".

Carbon emissions grew by 2% over the previous year, about 0.6 gigatons - "roughly equivalent to the carbon emissions associated with increasing the number of passenger cars on the planet by a third", the company's chief economist Spencer Dale said in a statement. But investors and activists say it needs to do more.

There was an unusual number of hot and cold days a year ago, which prompted increased demand for both heating and cooling, the multinational oil and gas company said in its annual global energy report.

Energy consumption has historically been closely linked to economic growth.

US Senators Not Happy About Arm Sales to Riyadh
The goal is to "protect and reaffirm Congress' role of approving arms sales to foreign governments", the report said. Ultimate power may rest with Congress, but day to day, the president acts while Congress struggles to react.

In the United States, the combined number of heating and cooling days was the highest since the 1950s, BP said.

Parts of the northern hemisphere were hit by freezing cold weather fronts last winter, only to face record temperatures in summer that resulted in vast fires and droughts.

The BP review showed an increase in oil and gas production, driven largely by a break-neck expansion of United States shale output.

While OPEC, Russia and other producers continue to cut back oil production in an effort to boost prices, U.S. drillers are rapidly increasing output, particularly from the prolific Permian basin in west Texas and New Mexico.

The increase in United States oil and gas production was the largest-ever annual increase by any country, BP said.

Renewable energy grew by 14.5%, nearing the record increase in 2017.
