  • Trump says he may move 2,000 USA troops to Poland

The additional troops will be sent to "enhance mutual interoperability" of the two countries' militaries, the unnamed administration official said on Tuesday.

Trump's warm relationship with Duda marks a stark contrast with how most European Union leaders have approached the Polish President. He noted that the added USA personnel will not be combat troops but "would potentially focus on providing additional defense and deterrence capabilities in Poland including training, advisers, ISR [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance] and sustainment support".

Poland requested a US troop increase in September, when Duda and Trump met in Washington.

Officials said Tuesday that the preliminary agreement avoids any permanent US base or presence in the country and sticks instead to a rotational force.

The new plans call for the construction of a new combat training center in Drawsko Pomorskie and additional facilities in the future.

The U.S. president said he thought he would travel to Poland at some point, but no dates were set yet.

President Donald Trump will welcome Polish President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday to the White House, where the two leaders are expected to take questions after inking a defense agreement that will station an additional 1,000 USA troops in Poland on a rotational basis. "You people would have a field day about that", Trump said from the White House during an appearance with Polish President Andrzej Duda, who first broached the idea of creating a Fort Trump in Poland during a previous sitdown.

He also said he hopes Russian Federation "will treat Poland with respect".

Following the Russian annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014, the US has again been increasing military activity in Europe in concert with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

"They're going to put on a very small show for us and we're doing that because Poland has ordered 32 or 35 brand new F-35′s at the highest level", Trump said.

The eastern European nations have reached out to the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for greater protection, worrying that they might be the next target of Russia's military advance.

Mr. Trump also told reporters Wednesday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit later this month.
