"National Security Operatives in the early hours of Wednesday 12 June, 2019 completed an operation which successfully rescued the two (2) Canadian women recently abducted in the Ashanti Region", a statement from Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said. No other details were immediately available.

Police said the women were volunteers with Youth Challenge International, a Canadian international development organisation headquartered in Toronto.

The two women, aged 19 and 20, were kidnapped from the Royal Golf Club in the city of Kumasi early last week, according to a police statement at the time.

The two Canadian women who were rescued this morning after being abducted in Ghana last week have been identified.

In a news release on Wednesday, Youth Challenge Internation stated that "Bailey and Lauren are receiving emotional and psychological support from professionals as they travel home", and that "medical reports are that they are both physically unhurt". Ghana's Information Ministry has tried to reassure travellers that the West African nation remains safe following a recent spate of kidnappings for ransom. They were abducted in Kumasi, the country's second-largest city, on June 4.

A joint collaboration between local authorities and security experts sent down from Canada to aid the investigation yielded immediate results, leading to the two girls being rescued by a national security team earlier today.

Nana Afuko-Addo, Ghana's president, has pledged to crack down on kidnappers amid fears that the upswing in abductions could harm their tourism industry. The country has been considered one of the safest in the region for foreign travellers.
