Ashleigh Barty hated her first trip to Paris but 10 years later, after one of the more remarkable tennis journeys, she woke up in the French capital on Sunday as queen of Roland Garros. Her dominant 6-1, 6-3 final victory on Saturday over Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova will certainly have her earmarked as a player who can consistently compete on the biggest stage.

The 8th-ranked Barty will jump up to No. 2 in the rankings (highest Australian women since 7-time Slam victor Evonne Goolagong Cawley on December 6, 1976.) and earns her over $2.5 million in prize money.

Australians all over the world are celebrating after tennis star Ashleigh Barty won the French Open overnight.

That was Barty's mood at the outset of her semifinal, which then took quite a turn.

Barty then lost the initial 12 points of the second set to trail 3-0 - and yet somehow won it.

It was only some way through the second set that we saw the Vondrousova, who toppled seeds in quick succession, attempt to mark a comeback.

"She is good for our nation".

She raced to a 4-0 lead before breezing through the opening set, taking full advantage of 19-year-old Vondrousova's early jitters.

The new world No.2 has chosen not to defend her title in Nottingham, instead opting to launch her grass-court campaign at Birmingham before winding up her Wimbledon preparations at Eastbourne from June 23.

But she needed to get away and reconsider how to approach her job and all that came with it.

Both Ashleigh Barty and Marketa Vondrousova have reached their maiden Grand Slam final. She has a huge serve, so it's all very tough to play against. A wave to the crowd, a hug for her coach, Craig Tyzzer, who came down to the court to meet her (rather than the winner's customary, chaotic scramble through the crowd up to the players' box) and it was time for the presentation ceremony. "I am so proud of myself and my whole team... it has been a insane two weeks", said Barty in a touching speech when all was said and done. With strong batting and bowling figures, Barty trained and played cricket in the 2015 season. It's pretty hard to find a way to beat her. Her parents, perhaps not expecting this run, were set to join her only for the grass season. I just needed to take a break and mentally refresh and sort of restart.

When Barty slammed a short smash high into the stands, it was all over.

"I'm excited to play over this next month in the United Kingdom and hopefully I can bring some really good level of tennis again to potentially give myself a chance to go deep in a major again".

Her boyfriend, Garry Kissick, shared a loving message on Instagram after the young champion's win.

Barty's playing skill has never been in question. This time, she was undone by Vondrousova, a left-hander who appears to possess every shot there is, with an enviable variety of speeds and angles.

For all her enormous skill, though, Barty's biggest weapon was, and will remain, her resolve.

"It might be a bit of a blessing in disguise that we're playing day after day after day just to keep the momentum going", said Barty, the first Australian woman in a Paris final since Samantha Stosur in 2010.

"I think any time I can play my brand of tennis, I know that I can match it against the best in the world". Vondrousova, who had not dropped a set en route the final, was utterly flummoxed at the end.
